Things that interest me

Author: loadx | Filed Under: personal, General

I haven’t really wrote something all that ‘personal’ for quite some time so I thought I might just throw this out there and see the response I get, if indeed it does generate response otherwise meh I tried.

So in more of an effort to describe myself in a little more depth I’m going to share with you all some of things that genuinely interest me and perhaps a few that don’t. What I ask in return is a simple comment with your interests or perhaps make a blog entry about and trackback to this post, let’s all try learn something from the experience eh? For brevity I’m going to just make this a list with adjoined subheadings and perhaps some links to various information.

Apple & BSD
* Widgets - usually I just like to see what’s on offer for dashboard
* Leopard - I mean what Mac enthusiast isn’t interested?
* Cocoa and all things apple dev
* Macports
* DesktopBSD
* FreeBSD

Google
What self respecting geek who loves fancy web apps doesn’t love Google? I try to stay afloat by reading the Google developer blog

AJAX & Web 2.0
Ajax development is moving so quickly as of late, with almost one new framework popping up every week and several well established ones already out there. It’s always interesting to see who’s doing what and how they’ve done it. Ajaxian is by far one of the better ways to keep in the know.
* JQuery
* Mootools
* Prototype
* JSON

PHP
Interesting to see where PHP will go but I wouldn’t really say I’m an avid reader of material of this nature. However occasionally I might stop by php.net or Wez Furlong’s blog and have a gander at what’s happening or planned.

Python
Since Gak pushing at me to look at Python I have become more than interested in what it has to offer however being as far rooted in PHP as I am it can become hard to try keep up with both languages.. I don’t really read any blogs but am kept up to date by tuning in on various conversations between Kestrel, Disp, Gak & JJ in #GFO.

Quake Development
I’m always mesmerised by how far the quake engines can be pushed and the best way I keep my ear to the ground is using quakesrc.org forums. A wealth of knowledge on hand and an amazing bunch of people.

Miscellaneous code and geek crap
* http://www.thinkgeek.org - need I say more
* http://www.slashdot.org - dropped off reading this alot lately. :(
* http://www.xkcd.com - started tuning into this comic strip. Thanks Nerk :)
* http://www.dilbert.com - mmm Dogbert.

Gadgets & Gizmo’s
keep somewhat up to date via engadget always nice to see what fancy tech I don’t really need is out there :P

METAL \m/
I’ve been in love with this vastly expanding genre of music since I was 11 and was introduced to Iron Maiden and have since been hooked. Best way I keep up with what’s out there is using blabbermouth’s blog and occasionally I might tune into full metal racket on Triple J. Also download various albums pre-release from various sites ;)

Comics
I wouldn’t say I’m really in with the comic scene but I love trashy Goth comics and am a loyal reader of everything Johnen Vasquez brings out…anyone who has any similar recommendations please let me know :D

Cartoons
LOVE cartoons and over the years have watched more than enough to know my favourites.

  • Futurama
  • Invader Zim
  • Simpsons(old)
  • Aeon Flux
  • Drawn Together
  • Southpark
  • Ren & Stimpy
  • King of the Hill
  • Beavis and Butthead
  • Metalocalypse

Film
I watch a lot of films but my favourite type is usually something that challenges your perspective or presents itself in a more abstract / random form and of course a good old comedy. Some of my favourite movies include:

  • Fightclub
  • Donnie Darko
  • Monty Python (all of them)
  • Lock stock and two smoking barrels
  • Snatch
  • Office Space
  • Brick
  • All of Kevin smith’s movies
  • The Matrix series
  • Star wars

Anime
Hah this shit I’m hooked on, I will say I am very picky when it comes to what series I’ll watch etc but I really do admire more plot based anime with a tendency to sometimes become more abstract or thought provoking (sounds like above uh?)

  • Eureka Seven
  • Boogiepop Phantom
  • Pumpkin Scissors (thanks Irving)
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion (LOVE)
  • Neia_7 (no real resolution but fun)
  • .Hack:// SIGN
  • Lain

God/Jesus & religion
Recently I’ve been reading more and more of the bible and conversing with others such as Murray or Aaron and sharing my views as well as hearing other people’s thoughts.

I wouldn’t really say I am astute with religion per say but I do believe and try my best to follow God. Religion I’ve always seen as something more cult like which can make people deeply set in their own ways get upset and can attribute to war and confusion.

Science
More to do with social science and things like quantum theory etc.

Girls
’nuff said

Wow if you’re still reading by now then thanks, I’m glad you pay so much attention to my life but enough about me already, let’s see what things interest you.

Well I’ve probably left something out but there is just a small glimpse into things that interest me.

Looking forward to see what other people are interested by.
Mat

    I’d guess you know most of the stuff I like, seeing as I knew what would be under here =P. The question is, are you doing to do an entry about the things that irritate you?
    I get my laptop and camera today. OMFG. I’ll bring ‘em over on the weekend.
    My tooth hurts =(

    P.S. The new header art rocks. Kudos to you, good sir.

    Thanks for noticing the new headers, though i cannot take credit for them. They’re all Salvador Dali’s works but i have saturated them more and added whats known as ‘bloom’ to them.

    As for writing an entry about this that irritate me, maybe later on down the track I dont really feel like relishing in negative things at the moment.

    Look foward to playing with the new gadgets :D

    aha.. I knew I recognised the Dali. Mm.. Irritates me that every textbook loads Dali with sexual undertones. WTFBBQ he could be fighting oppression with that pomegranite! Anywhore, I like Franz Marc from 1912 onwards, even though he was a tool and followed movements to a tee. I like literature, biology and physiology, DECENT anime, more or less anything re: historic japan, Blair’s cool toys (wish I had them when I was little), the friendships I have, (are you noticing there is absolutely nothing related to computers here? Great lot in common hu? lol) Lurve garlic, belly dancing and related exotic things, imported goods from oxfam, Patchouli smell (teehee), cottage cheese, watching fish swim around, rain smell, being Blair’s mummy!
    I cant think of anything else, surely there’s more. =) Enjoy.

    It’s somewhat sad (for me) that you have this huge list of interests and mine is pretty much “Karl, PHP, food”

    Oh dear :S

    It depends on how you interpret that. You see, for you maybe you have defined what matters to you most and kept everything else thats distracting away. Only you’d know :)

    “I wouldn’t really say I am astute with religion per say but I do believe and try my best to follow God.”

    It’s interesting that you cite Star Wars in you movie list. To quote Yoda, regading you above quoted comment, “Do, do not, there is no try.”

    Will insert some interests when I have more time. =)
